
The Escalante Ranger District is known for its picturesque high mountain lakes and bright stands of aspens. A paved bike road runs parallel to Highway 12 for bikers to safely ride from Red Canyon to the East Fork of the Sevier River. In 1925, tunnels were dug through the limestone fins to impress dignitaries and provide a gateway to Bryce Canyon National Park.

This unique and majestic canyon is lined with stark spires and ghostly hoodoos that have eroded from the red limestone and sandstone. On the Powell Ranger District, Red Canyon is a highlight for many.

The Powell and Escalante Ranger Districts offer an abundance of recreational opportunities, stunning overlooks and beautiful canyons. The area known locally as Cedar Mountain (is really the Markagunt Plateau) on the edge of the Colorado Plateau consists of a large field of stark and abrasive lava beds that sit near the center of the plateau, some of which are less than 2,000 years old. There are many interesting places that lies witnin the Cedar City Ranger District, such as Cedar Mountain, Navajo Lake, Cascade Falls Trails and the lava beds. In the summer, you can tour the Pine Valley Chapel, built in the late 1800s by a Scottish shipbuilder. There is excellent fishing in both the Santa Clara River and the Pine Valley reservoir. Pine Valley Ranger District offers several trails in the area for hiking, biking, horseback riding, and OHV riding in the Pine Valley Recreation Area. The Pine Valley and Cedar City Ranger Districts are situated in the southeastern portion of Utah and the Forest.
